ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system (EMS) that newly has been launched with a new version of the standard, ISO 14001:2015,replacing the previous one (ISO 14001:2008).

Recently, the structure of the template of ISO 14001 has changed significantly to align with Annex SL. The standard has been revised, with key improvements such as the increased prominence of environmental management within the organization’s strategic planning processes, greater input from leadership and a stronger commitment to proactive initiatives that boost environmental performance. This revision is known as High-Level Structure and allows for easier integration into other existing ISO management systems thanks to the same structure, terms and definitions.

The adoption of ISO 14001:2105 system is a strategic decision that helps an organization to improve its environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste, gaining a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders. Therefore, many organisations implement this EMS after understanding that ISO 14001:2015 contains requirements for improvements, in order to provide assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders, that environmental impact is being measured and improved.
